Disclaimers: This isn't a list of the best movies of the first ten years of 2000-2009, just favorites among what I've watched, favorites being movies I could watch over and over, or just struck me particularly hard. I can't rate movies that I haven't seen, and since (especially since I've taken up poker almost nightly) I tend to see movies once they come onto cable, this might as well be a list running up to 2008 only. I just cobbled this together from scanning through the by-year lists on IMDB to make sure they qualified, date-wise. Upon further reflection titles might leap back and forth between top-rated and honorably mentioned, or on or off this list altogether. But here goes: Miracle (2004) - Great retelling of Herb Brooks and the 1980 Olympic Hockey team, although Disney left out Herb's closing words to his team when reminding them that, due to the quirky way that particular Olympics had played out so far, they still had to beat Finland or they'd end up with no medal instead of the gold: "If you blow this, you will carry it to your f*****g grave." I've seen 17 of the films on your faves list, and liked most of them. Eternal Sunshine and Memento (because they were complex enough to be worth seeing twice, yet inviting enough to make me want to) and O Brother (because it was so delightfully stylized) were my favorites. Little Miss Sunshine wins the "film I expected to hate, but enjoyed" award. There are movies that one look at the previews convinces me will be utterly worthless yet manage to win me over; "My Cousin Vinny," after one of those excruciating Shakespearean comedy-of-errors openings where everything is totally mucked up and you know you'll have to slog through a couple of hours of clearing everything up, was like that (because Vinny actually turns out to have the makings of an excellent attorney).
