My mother’s father arrived in South Africa in the 1930’s, after leaving Germany. He was lucky. Many of his family were deported to Poland, only later to be confined to the Krakow ghetto, only later to be gassed at Auschwitz. My father’s father was from Lithuania. He travelled, and arrived in South Africa, alone, at 14 years old.
What if my oil filter is rated for 5,000 miles, but my synthetic motor oil is rated for 15,000 miles?
Does this mean that I must go through the hassle of draining (in order to preserve) my synthetic oil every time I replace the oil filter?
Are there long lasting (15,000 miles between changes) engine oil filters available?
There are longer life oil filters available, Amsoil is one of them. What makes them last? Oil filter quality is based on alot of criterias but one of the most important is the amount of "media" in the filter. The media is the "fiber" that traps contaminates, When 99% of the TOP manufacturers can only make oil filters for 3-5k how can someone else make one to go 15k? They can't. If you are smart enough to use a synthetic why "dumb" (nothing personal) it up with not wanting to just replace an oil filter & 1/2qt. of oil every 3-5k? Do yourself a favor & change your oil & filter on a regular basis!
PS-When you just change the oil filter you DO NOT have to drain the crankcase. Just do the filter, run the vehicle for leaks & to fill the filter then top-off oil as the dipstick indicates. When you pull the filter you DO NOT lose all the oil, maybe a 1/2qt. even if you leave it off for days! (depends on size of filter)
PSS-Oil filters are equipped with a "by-pass" valve, when they are "full" (so to speak) the valve closes & no longer filters the oil, it does just that- by-passes it!
